Reinventing Reality
UC Berkeley's Lawrence Hall and Science Centers Across North America

7,000 sq. ft. Virtual Science Center Traveling Exhibition
15 cities | 3M visitors

The visitor wears a VR headset and sits with their arms outstretched on a table, holding a pair of grips. In the virtual environment, they see a representation of their own arm in the same position on a virtual table. A virtual character appears and gently brushes the virtual arm. Simultaneously, an automated brush strokes the visitor's real arm. Because the physical sensations perfectly align with what they see, their brain perceives the virtual arm as their own. The virtual arm then begins to lengthen, leading to the curious sensation that their real arm is stretching. This experience is inspired by seminal research and is part of the exhibit's Illusions section, which explores how our perception of reality can be altered.
